What happens if your online course gets pirated?
Nothing feels worse than when you put your heart and soul into creating an online course, and then someone rips it off and starts selling it for pennies compared to your original price.
In today's video, I am going to cover exactly how to deal with online course piracy and how to catch it, or even how to prevent piracy ahead of time!

Hey, everybody, Dan Henry here, author of the wall street journal, a bestselling book, digital millionaire secrets. And this is all about how to sell your advice, how to sell online courses in education. And I'm also the founder of getclients.com. And today I'm going to show you how to deal with piracy. All right. So let's, let's walk over to the board here. Nothing, nothing feels worse than when you put your heart, your soul into an online course and it gets pirated. So let's say you have a thousand dollar course, and you find that all of a sudden, you have this thousand dollar course. And in this thousand dollar course, you teach all this amazing stuff. You sell it. And then one day you find that it's on some website for 50 bucks, or what's worse than this is the strategy. The pirates use is generally people will have a paid Facebook group, right? They'll have a paid group and then they'll have a free group, right? So this is the free group, and this is where your students go.
And this is where your prospects go, right? And what'll happen is people will buy your program, charge you back, refund it, whatever. And then the hop over here into the free group. And they'll start messaging all the people in the group and say, Hey, would you like Dan's course for 50 bucks? And they'll just sell multiple copies a day and they'll just scavenge, right? They'll just scavenge. So how do you deal with this? How do you deal with it? So let me tell you what I said to do what I used to do to deal with this and what I do now. And I believe what I do now is much, much better. So first of all, the number one thing you have to realize is time versus money, right? Time versus money. So we used to hire this company that would go out and would literally find every copy of every pirated online course, every listing in Google.
And we'd pay them a lot of money per month to go and take it down, remove it from Google, send cease and desist letters. And it was so much effort, so much time. And I thought to myself, this is not bringing me any more money because at the end of the day, somebody who's going to download your course for free. It's not going to get any results. They're just not because they don't want to invest in themselves to achieve their goal. They're going to go pirate it. They're not going to get results anyway, probably never going to buy from you in the first place. So, you know, when I really realized this, I thought to myself, I thought, am I really truly like actually putting my money my time and my effort into the right place by trying to get all this stuff taken down.
And I realized that I just, I just wasn't. And so the first thing that I did, number one was I accepted it. I accepted that, no matter what, you're going to get your online course pirated. Because even if you get all the websites, all the Google listings, you're still going to have people doing this and you can't control this. You can kick people out. We used to go in and we used to use like ghosts or, or we would go in there and we would say, Hey, I'm looking, you know, we'd create a ghost Facebook account, we'd go in the free group. And we'd be like, I'm looking to buy Dan's course. You know, does anybody have any discount codes? And then immediately five, six people would hop on that and say, are you going to do this course for 50 bucks? And then we'd be like, Oh really?
Well, how can I pay you PayPal? Okay, give me your PayPal address. They'd give them the PayPal address. We'd screenshot everything. We'd send it to PayPal. We'd get their PayPal account shut down. And it worked. And we got so many people's PayPal account shuts down from that. But let me tell you something right now, within two days they had another one up. It's like one of them it's like the snake. You cut off one head to grow in its place. So I thought about, look, if there's leaves on the ground, cut down the tree, right? Don't rake the leaves up every day, cut down the tree. By the way, that's just an analogy. Not saying to cut down any trees. I love cheese. I love the environment. What I'm trying to say here is that you must accept that it's going to happen. So that's number one. And I'm going to teach you how to actually stop it from happening in a moment. But first understand that when you've already put something out there, you're selling it over an order page. It's a low price. And you know, people aren't signing contracts to get into it or buy it. You're not talking to them on the phone. They're just buying it on the order page. You have to accept that it's going to get pirated. So number two, you must learn to leverage.
If you have a low ticket product that like a low ticket course that eventually leads to a higher ticket product. Think about this. What if somebody found your course for free watched it went, wow, this is amazing. And then decided to buy the higher ticket offer or service that is not able to be pirated. You've still acquired a new customer, even though they didn't pay for the original course. Okay. Think about that for a second. So if you have any low ticket products that you like, I'll give you an example. My book, this is hilarious. So I found after I released my book, that people that read my book at a, at a very high rate, we'll go and buy my higher end coaching program because they read the book. They love the book. They believe in the book and they want my help implementing what's in the book.
And so they go buy my higher end program that you can't pirate. And I'll talk more about why you can't pirate it in a moment, but they buy this. Okay. And then they go and do it. So it was funny at FHL funnel hacking live, which is Russell Brunson's event. I gave a free copy of this on every seat during my speech, there were 5,000 copies of this Bookout. Well, some joker decided that he was going to run around like some sort of crazy person and collect, you know, dozens and dozens and dozens. I guess he got about a hundred copies of this book and go and sell them on eBay. And so he does it, right? And it's like, dude, first of all, if you think building a business by grabbing a copy of my book and selling it on eBay if you think that's building a business, well, you're never going to build a business.
You're just a scavenger. You're just the literally lowest on the totem pole of humanity. But guess what? You're still helping me because I have literally since then have, and I know this for a fact because we ask people on the call. When we talk to people about joining our program, I've made no less than six figures from people that have acquired my book, you legally, or, or on eBay, not from my official website or not from Amazon that have literally acquired it elsewhere, who have bought my program. So think about that and learn, think about your programs and learn instead of complaining, accept it and leverage it. And you'll find that you'll grow much faster when you learn to work the system and not let the system work you cause you can't stop this right? You can't stop that. You can't stop the eBays. You can't stop the WSO. You can't stop the torrents. You know, you can't stop all this, but you can leverage it. Don't let the system work. You, you work the system. Now the third thing here, and this is how to prevent it. It's very simple.
High tickets. I made a decision a long time ago to stop selling online courses that were priced cheaply. I always say, or these days I say I don't have anything cheap because I don't have anything that sucks. Now here's the thing. When you sell a higher ticket online course or coaching program, you're going to sell it over the phone. You're going to record the call and they're going to sign a contract on the phone and they're going to pay you a lot of money. So the people that pirate courses are the people who are cowards, they usually will buy it with a card and charge it back. Or what have you. They're not the type of people that get on the phone, have their voice recording their IP address, recorded sign a legal binding contract. Hey, or why are you a ton of money?
Like they're not going to. And plus they don't have that much money probably anyway. Cause they're sitting around selling copies of people's programs for 50 bucks. So when you sell high-ticket, that just doesn't happen. We've never had our high ticket program pirated. Sure. We've had event record recordings, pirated. We've had my book sold on eBay. I've had my early cheap courses pirated, but at the end of the day, I've never had my higher end stuff pirated because it just doesn't happen. So if you want to actually kill piracy completely, you charge high ticket, you sell it over the phone. It won't happen. But here's the thing. If I ever did create an online course, that was lower-priced, like super low priced that I thought, well, I'm, you know, I'm going to put this out and maybe if people buy it, they'll buy my high ticket.
You know, a lot of people talk about that as the value ladder. Well, what I would do is I would first accept that it will probably at some point get pirated. And number two, I would leverage that by making sure that if it did, they would watch it and then buy my high ticket. And I would focus on my high ticket, which doesn't get pirated. Cause think about it. If you accept it, you leverage it. And it funnels the high ticket. You are not being worked by the system. You are working, the system, you are making the pirate, the pirates are making 50 bucks a pop, but they're helping you make thousands. You work the system that's called being smart.
